NSW builders lose their contractor licence renewal every year over CPD mistakes that are entirely avoidable. Here are the 7 most common ones — and exactly how to avoid them.

Get It Done Today
Twelve CPD points per year sounds simple. In practice, NSW builders get caught out by the same avoidable mistakes year after year — wrong provider, wrong learning areas, wrong timing, wrong name on the certificate. Each one is a real reason Fair Trading has refused or delayed a contractor licence renewal. Here is every mistake, why it happens, and how to make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

Mistake 1 — Using a Provider That Isn’t an RTO
NSW builder CPD must be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). An RTO is registered with ASQA and appears on the national training register at training.gov.au. If your provider is not an RTO, your points do not count — no matter how good the course was.
What doesn’t count, even if it feels like training:
- Supplier product demonstrations and lunch-and-learns
- YouTube tutorials and online videos — even from reputable sources
- Industry association seminars not delivered through an accredited RTO
- In-house company training without RTO accreditation
- Webinars from non-RTO organisations
- Reading trade publications and industry journals
Builders CPD Online is RTO 91528. Every certificate we issue includes the RTO number and is verifiable by NSW Fair Trading. Before enrolling with any provider, ask for their RTO number and check it at training.gov.au.
Mistake 2 — Not Covering All 8 Learning Areas
It is not enough to complete 12 CPD points. Those 12 points must span all 8 NSW Fair Trading learning areas. A builder who completes 12 points across only 3 learning areas — all in technical building, for example — is non-compliant even though the point count is correct.
The 8 required learning areas are: Compliance and Legal, Technical Building, Business Management, WHS and Safety, Sustainability, Financial Management, Customer Service and Dispute Resolution, and Digital Literacy. At least one point must come from each area. Builders CPD Online covers all 8 in a single enrolment — the platform tracks your learning area coverage automatically. For a full breakdown, see our guide to the 8 CPD learning areas for NSW builders.
Mistake 3 — Leaving CPD Until the Week Before Renewal
CPD left to the last week creates two problems. First, if anything goes wrong — a technical issue, a payment problem, a course that takes longer than expected — you have no buffer. Second, the Service NSW renewal process itself takes 1–3 business days after submission. Lodge too late and your licence expires before the renewal is processed.
Practical rule: have CPD completed and your certificate in hand at least 2 weeks before your renewal date. The 12 points take 1–2 days online. There is no reason to be scrambling. If your renewal is coming up in the next 6 weeks, start today — see how long it actually takes to complete 12 CPD points online.

Mistake 4 — CPD Certificate in the Company Name, Not Your Name
NSW CPD is attached to the individual contractor licence holder — not the business. If you operate through a company and your CPD certificate is issued to “Smith Constructions Pty Ltd” instead of “John Smith”, it will not satisfy Fair Trading’s requirement for your individual licence renewal.
Always enrol with your personal name exactly as it appears on your contractor licence. If your certificate shows the wrong name, contact your provider immediately to have it corrected — most RTOs can reissue a corrected certificate, but allow time for this before your renewal date.
Mistake 5 — Assuming Training Through Your Employer Counts
Many employed builders complete workplace training and assume it satisfies their CPD obligation. It only counts if that training was delivered by or through an RTO and a certificate with an RTO number was issued to you personally. On-the-job learning, mentoring, and employer-run inductions — however valuable — are not CPD unless delivered by an accredited RTO.
If your employer provides regular training, ask HR whether the provider is an RTO. Request a certificate after each qualifying session and keep it on file. Do not assume — confirm.
Mistake 6 — Carrying Over Points From Last Year
CPD points do not roll over between licence periods. If you completed 16 points last year, you cannot carry 4 of them into this year’s renewal cycle. Every licence renewal period requires 12 fresh CPD points completed within that specific period. Fair Trading checks the dates on your certificate against your current licence period dates.
If you completed more than 12 points last year — good practice, but those extra points are gone. This year starts from zero.
Mistake 7 — Not Checking Whether Your Licence Has Lapsed
A surprising number of builders discover their licence lapsed months ago when they go to renew it. Once a licence expires, it’s no longer a renewal — it becomes a reinstatement application. The reinstatement process is more involved, takes longer, and may require additional documentation. Worse, you cannot legally enter into residential building contracts while your licence is lapsed.
Check your licence status right now at the NSW Fair Trading licence check tool. If it shows as expired, do not ignore it — contact Fair Trading directly about reinstatement. If it shows as current, note the exact expiry date and set a reminder to complete CPD at least 3 weeks before that date.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common reason NSW builders fail their CPD renewal?
Using a training provider that is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Builders often complete genuine, quality training through non-RTO providers — industry associations, suppliers, employers — and assume it counts. Without an RTO number on the certificate, it does not count under NSW Fair Trading’s rules.
Can I do all 12 CPD points in one learning area?
No. NSW Fair Trading requires CPD to cover all 8 approved learning areas. Completing 12 points in only one or two areas does not satisfy the requirement, even if the total point count is correct. You need at least one point from each of the 8 areas.
What happens if my CPD certificate has the wrong name on it?
Contact your RTO immediately and request a corrected certificate. Most RTOs can reissue with the correct name. Allow at least a week for this process before your renewal date. The name on your certificate must match the name on your contractor licence exactly.
Do CPD points carry over to next year if I do more than 12?
No. CPD points cannot be carried forward between licence periods. Each renewal cycle requires 12 fresh points completed within that specific period. Points from previous periods have no value for future renewals regardless of how many extra points were completed.
My licence has lapsed — can I still renew it?
A lapsed licence requires a reinstatement application, not a standard renewal. The process involves additional steps and may take longer. Complete your CPD first, then contact NSW Fair Trading directly. Do not sign residential building contracts while your licence is lapsed — this is a criminal offence under the Home Building Act 1989.
How do I know if my CPD provider is a genuine RTO?
Search the provider’s name or RTO number at training.gov.au — the national register maintained by ASQA. If they are listed there as a current RTO with their registration active, their certificates count. Builders CPD Online is RTO 91528 and is listed on the national register.
I work for a builder — do I still need my own CPD?
If you hold a contractor licence in your own name — yes. The CPD obligation is on the licence holder regardless of employment status. If you are simply employed and do not hold a licence, you have no personal CPD obligation under the Home Building Act. But if you are building on your own licence even part-time, 12 points per year is required.
How quickly can I complete CPD if my renewal is coming up fast?
Most builders complete all 12 CPD points in one to two days through Builders CPD Online. The platform is self-paced, fully online, and accessible from any device. You can register now and have your certificate ready today if needed. See our guide on how long it takes to complete CPD online for a full breakdown.
