NSW contractor licence renewals are refused every year because builders assume their CPD is sorted when it isn’t. The most common problems: points done through an unregistered provider, wrong learning areas covered, certificate not matching the licence holder’s name, or the CPD completed after the renewal lodgement date. This checklist covers every item you need to confirm before you hit submit.
Work through each item in order. If you hit a “No” on any of them, fix it before proceeding. A renewal lodged with outstanding CPD issues gets flagged — and once it’s flagged, it takes longer to resolve than doing it right the first time.

The 10-Point CPD Checklist Before Licence Renewal
Each item below is a real reason NSW Fair Trading has refused or delayed a contractor licence renewal. Tick every one before you lodge.
| # | Checklist Item | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | You have completed exactly 12 CPD points this licence year | Fair Trading requires 12 — not 10, not 11. Partial completion does not count. |
| 2 | All 12 points came from an RTO-registered training provider | YouTube videos, free webinars, and non-RTO courses do not count regardless of content quality. |
| 3 | Your CPD covers all 8 Fair Trading learning areas | 12 points in only 2–3 learning areas is non-compliant. All 8 must be represented. |
| 4 | Your CPD certificate is issued in your name — not a company name | The CPD must attach to the individual licence holder, not the business entity. |
| 5 | The certificate shows the RTO number of your provider | No RTO number = unverifiable = not accepted. Builders CPD Online is RTO 91528. |
| 6 | CPD was completed within this licence period — not a previous year | CPD from last year’s renewal cycle cannot be carried over to the next. |
| 7 | You have a digital or printed copy of the certificate ready to upload | Service NSW will ask for it during the online renewal process. |
| 8 | Your licence is not already expired | If your licence has lapsed, renewal becomes a reinstatement application — a longer, more involved process. |
| 9 | Your contact details with Fair Trading are current | Renewal notices and CPD reminders go to the address on file. Wrong address = missed deadline. |
| 10 | You know your licence expiry date — not just the approximate month | Builders frequently misjudge their renewal window by weeks. Check your actual expiry date at Service NSW. |
How to Check Your Licence Expiry Date
Go to the NSW Fair Trading licence check tool and search your name or licence number. Your expiry date is listed against your licence record. This is the authoritative source — do not rely on a reminder letter or your memory of when you last renewed.
NSW contractor licences are typically issued for 1 or 3 years. If you chose a 3-year licence, your CPD requirement is 36 points total — 12 per year across the full 3-year period. You can complete all 36 points upfront or year by year. Builders CPD Online offers a 36-point package for $449.
Signs your renewal is at risk:
- You can’t immediately name the RTO that delivered your CPD
- You completed training through your employer — but haven’t checked if it was RTO-accredited
- You attended industry events and assumed they counted as CPD
- You completed 12 points but only covered 3–4 learning areas
- Your renewal date is within 8 weeks and you haven’t started CPD yet
- You completed CPD last year and assumed it carries forward

What If You Haven’t Started CPD Yet?
If your renewal is coming up and you haven’t started — start today. Most builders complete all 12 CPD points in one to two days through Builders CPD Online. The platform is self-paced, fully online, and accessible from your phone. You can register now and have your certificate by tonight.
The one thing you cannot do is leave it until the day your renewal is due. The renewal process through Service NSW takes 1–3 business days to process even after you submit. Lodge early, CPD done, certificate uploaded — then it’s out of your hands.
For a full walkthrough of what happens at renewal, see our step-by-step guide to renewing your NSW builder licence. And if you’re concerned about what happens if CPD isn’t complete, read what happens if a builder does not complete CPD.
What Counts as a Valid CPD Provider?
Only training delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) counts toward NSW builder CPD. RTOs are registered with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and appear on the national training register at training.gov.au. An RTO number on your certificate is the proof.
Common non-qualifying “training” that builders sometimes count by mistake: supplier product training, unskilled YouTube tutorials, industry association seminars not delivered through an RTO, in-house company training without RTO accreditation, and first aid refreshers from non-RTO providers. If there’s no RTO number on the certificate, it doesn’t count — full stop.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I lodge my renewal without completing CPD?
NSW Fair Trading will flag your renewal as incomplete. Your licence will not be renewed until CPD is confirmed. If your existing licence expires during this period, you cannot legally sign contracts for residential building work. This is not a fine — it’s a hard block on your ability to operate.
Can I use CPD from last year toward this year’s renewal?
No. CPD must be completed within the current licence period. Points from a previous licence year do not carry forward. Each renewal cycle requires 12 fresh CPD points from that specific period.
Do I need CPD for a company licence or just my individual licence?
The CPD requirement attaches to the nominated supervisor on the company licence — the individual who holds the underlying contractor licence. That person must complete 12 CPD points. The company itself does not separately complete CPD.
How long before renewal should I complete my CPD?
At least 2–3 weeks before your renewal date is the practical minimum. This gives you time to complete the courses, receive your certificate, and lodge your renewal without rushing. Leaving CPD until the week of renewal creates unnecessary stress and risk if any technical issue arises.
I did training through my builder association — does it count?
Only if the training was delivered by or through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and a certificate with an RTO number was issued. Many association events are not RTO-accredited. Check the certificate for an RTO number. If there isn’t one, that training does not count toward your 12 CPD points.
What’s the difference between 12-point and 36-point CPD?
12 CPD points covers one year of licence renewal ($169). 36 CPD points covers a 3-year licence renewal ($449). If you hold or are renewing a 3-year licence, you need 36 points total — you can complete them all upfront with the 36-point package or 12 at a time each year.
My licence has already expired — what do I do?
A lapsed licence requires a reinstatement application through NSW Fair Trading — not a standard renewal. The process is more involved and may require additional documentation. Complete your 12 CPD points first, then contact NSW Fair Trading directly to discuss reinstatement. Do not sign any building contracts while your licence is lapsed.
How do I prove my CPD to Fair Trading?
Your RTO-issued CPD certificate is the proof. It should include your name, the courses completed, the CPD points awarded, the completion date, and the RTO number. Builders CPD Online (RTO 91528) issues this certificate instantly on completion and emails it directly to you.
